After a very light snowfall, I was able to capture these individual snowflakes standing up and standing out from the rest of the newly fallen snow.
Snowflakes are conglomerations of frozen ice crystals which fall through the Earth's atmosphere. They begin as snow crystals which develop when microscopic supercooled cloud droplets freeze. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Complex shapes emerge as the flake moves through differing temperature and humidity regimes, such that individual snowflakes are nearly unique in structure.
A non-aggregated snowflake often exhibits six-fold radial symmetry. The initial symmetry can occur because the crystalline structure of ice is six-fold. The six "arms" of the snowflake, or dendrites, then grow independently, and each side of each arm grows independently. Most snowflakes are not completely symmetric. The micro-environment in which the snowflake grows changes dynamically as the snowflake falls through the cloud, and tiny change...
I love to spend time outdoors, and going out with a camera in my hand makes me so much more aware of everything around me. It's amazing the things I notice that I would otherwise walk by without a glance. I am inspired by the beauty of the different seasons in the Lakes Country of Minnesota, where I live. I hope through my photography to share a little bit of the world as I have come to see it through my lens. I was honored to have my image "Another Day at the Lodge" published in the December 2019 issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine. You can find some of my work at Bridgette's Main Frames in Perham, MN, and at the Red Door Art Gallery in Wahpeton, ND. I hope you enjoy the shots I've chosen to share. Thanks for stopping...

Feeling honored today, as Outdoor Photographer Magazine has chosen to use this image to promote their current assignment on their website and Facebook page, February 2014. I had submitted it last year during a similar assignment, and they apparently pulled it from the archives now. http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/gallery/assignments.html
