Penny, this is a stunning capture of this wonderfully aging homestead. I love how the golden-leaved tree limbs in the foreground contrast against these blue-gray weathered boards. I also enjoyed reading your interesting description. I will continue to check back to watch as this fine series progresses. F&V

Penny Meyers replied:

Doug, thank you so much for your kind comments and F/V! I started out just wanting a good shot of the old place while it was still standing for our neighbor, who is quite sentimental about his dad's place, but I have become more and more fascinated with it myself.

Oh, what stories those weakened walls could tell. That open door would really grab my interest here (keeping "safety first", though). The Captain's Homestead would be well-worth some additional views. Excellent find and capture, Penny!

Penny Meyers replied:

Gene, thanks so much for your kind words and inspiration!! I do struggle with that open door, as have been told by area residents they think some sort of wildlife is living inside, so have resisted getting too close. There will be more views to come!

Love old buildings and love to see them captured and preserved in photos before their total demise. I really like how the yellow of the fall foliage creeps into view, just as age creeps up on the building. Lovely image, Penny! fave and vote

Very nice and who is captain ed? voting and promoting!

Penny Meyers replied:

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful comments, Kimberleigh!! Captain Ed was our friend's father, who used to own this old farmhouse, which is just down the road from us.

Artist's Description

Captain Ed's Homestead in the fall of 2011.
This will be an ongoing series of photos taken of a little old farmstead in West Central Minnesota. It is currently owned by a rural neighbor, and his dad grew up here. I don't know if Ed was actually a Captain of anything, other than his farm, but he was affectionately known as "Captain Ed." I am attempting to capture it in different seasons and different situations over time.

About Penny Meyers

Penny Meyers

I love to spend time outdoors, and going out with a camera in my hand makes me so much more aware of everything around me. It's amazing the things I notice that I would otherwise walk by without a glance. I am inspired by the beauty of the different seasons in the Lakes Country of Minnesota, where I live. I hope through my photography to share a little bit of the world as I have come to see it through my lens. I was honored to have my image "Another Day at the Lodge" published in the December 2019 issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine. You can find some of my work at Bridgette's Main Frames in Perham, MN, and at the Red Door Art Gallery in Wahpeton, ND. I hope you enjoy the shots I've chosen to share. Thanks for stopping...
